Traianos the Great

Just a little while ago, Greece beat the Czech Republic to advance to the finals of Euro 2004. This is an amazing story because Greece has never done anything special in soccer. In fact, at the Euro tournament they had never advanced out of the first round. They now go on to face the host nation, Portugal, in the finals (whom they beat in the opening match of the tournament). I doubt that Greece can beat the Portugese twice in front of the home crowd, but with this team anything is possible.

The game winning goal was scored in the 105th +1 minute by Traianos Dellas. Traianos Dellas is an interesting case. He has always been a guy on the move. From Panserraikos FC and Aris Thessaloniki in the Greek League, he moved to Sheffield United in the English Primier League. Then he went back to Greece for two years, eventually joining Athens. After that, he played for Perugia of the Italian league, and ended up playing for Roma. He is now a Greek Hero. Quite the ride for a guy who is only 28 years old!
